Madeleine Mortimore is the Global Education Innovation and Research Lead for Logitech, where she leads research on EdTech hardware. With years of experience as a classroom teacher, Madeleine has developed a curriculum for grades 4-12. Her research experience includes positions at the MIT Teaching and Learning Lab. Madeleine has a Master of Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Show Highlights

  • Setting clear values on how you function as an educational team  requires reorienting structure toward impact for students in the education space, not what's easiest.
  • Incorporating voices from different angles of innovation drives meaningful change around a collective purpose to build community and support.
  • Logitech’s interactive tools to avoid complacency, increase student voice, and alleviate stress in the classroom.
  • The need to pivot from unrealistic assumptions pertaining to classrooms is needed to find balance in discovering true knowledge and abilities within your learning community.
  • Arm your staff with the right knowledge of what is truly a classroom.
  • You need this “North Star” to drive impact that takes many different routes.
  • Why is teaching infinitely harder than being a doctor?

“Sometimes it's hard to really stand your ground where maybe it's cheaper, maybe it's faster, or we need to hit a certain timeline.  I've learned my personal Northstar is just as important as having team values. I can stay really focused when there are those decisions to make, when the impact in the classroom is against the corporate need to be within a certain budget or timeline.”

Title: How to Use Storytelling To Address the (In)Equity in Education

Max Freedman is a reporter, producer, and co-host of School Colors. He created School Colors with Mark Winston Griffith, a veteran community organizer and the editor of Brooklyn Deep. After four years of research and reporting, the first season premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim. He is thrilled to publish Season 2 through NPR's Code Switch.Freedman is also one of the creators of Unsettled, a long-running independent podcast about Israel-Palestine and the Jewish diaspora. Before becoming a journalist, Freedman was a facilitator with Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, adjunct faculty at Pratt Institute and a senior educator at the New-York Historical Society, where he created an enrichment program for grades 4-8 using musicals to teach American history. He holds a B.A. in theater from Northwestern University, and an M.S. in design and urban ecologies from Parsons School of Design. His work on School Colors Season 2 was supported by the Spencer Education Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University.

Mark Winston Griffith is the creator, host and writer of School Colors along with Max Freedman. Griffith is a third-generation resident of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Until April 2022, he was the Executive Director of the Brooklyn Movement Center, a Black-led community organizing group based in Central Brooklyn that he co-founded in 2011. He has served as an adjunct professor of urban reporting at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, and has been a board member of The City news site, City Limits Magazine and Free Speech TV.

“We spend so much time in School Colors thinking about the problems, looking at what's going wrong and the barriers. To be quite frank, we don't spend enough time with kids and the very subject of the things that we're talking about. In spending that little time with those kids, it brought home to me what this was all about in the first place. These are not subjects or like broken people. These are vibrant human beings.”

If we say that we're doing this for the kids, but we want to have power over them, is that really for them if it's controlling them? This is one of many major mindset shifts that needs to happen in teachers and in schools.”

    • Intentionally design engaging moments with the most powerful thing you can give a child.
    • Successful ways to connect with millennial parents.
  • Address children’s mental health issues without developing a new set of skills.

“The lens that I look at this through involves kids, whether it's in building or cleaning, not to teach them a skill and check it off, which is valuable, but to depend on them for their work is the difference between being wanted, which is great and needed. There's a lot of neuroscience research that as soon as we perceive we are needed by a community, we are then much more connected to that community. Travis talked about the power of being seen. A great way to help kids feel seen is to say, `we need you.’”

Originally a teacher and school leader, for the past 20 years, James has been working with schools to make classrooms more thoughtful places. He challenges teachers to think deeply about their own Mindsets and how their beliefs are communicated to students in often subtle and unintended ways.James’s work combines Growth Mindset with Habits of Mind and Practice to create Learning Agility. He puts the growth back into the Growth Mindset! And, through creating and describing the Mindset Continuum, he provides the cornerstone for effective Growth Mindset interventions. James values the relationships he builds with the schools and teachers he works with, providing the “follow-through” that’s so often lacking in teacher professional development. His speaking, workshops and online resources provide not only the deep understanding required to do this work meaningfully, but also the tools and ongoing support needed to sustain it in your school and make a real difference to student learning outcomes.

James will show you how to create your school-based Growth Mindset Style Guide to ensure your school consistently “nudges” all students towards an increasingly growth-oriented Mindset.

James is a Certified Speaking Professional and regularly speaks at conferences around the world. His previous publications include Succeeding with Habits of Mind, The Agile Learner, The Learning Landscape and The Mindset Continuum, as well as a host of e-books and other teacher resources. His online course, “Transforming Teaching and Learning with Growth Mindsets,” supports thousands of educators in schools around the world. He is an international affiliate of Art Costa and Bena Kallick’s Institute for Habits of Mind and the creator of www.habitsofmind.org.

“One of my favorite quotes is ‘there is no growth without discomfort.’ If we're going to grow, we need to be comfortable with that feeling of discomfort, knowing that to grow we are going to feel uncomfortable. Seven out of ten uncomfortable, not nine or ten out of uncomfortable, not way off the deep end going, ‘Oh my god, I can't do this’, but uncomfortable enough.”

“Ideally we want the highest skill set and the culture fit. We want those together, but if we've got to take a culture fit, then maybe somebody has a little less skill set. I'll take that person every day because I can train that person. That person's coachable. Culture starts with town acquisition and not being afraid to go look for that person who's going to complement your team, not just seeking to seek employment.”

Jordan Mareno is a Partnerships Manager at Project Invent, a nonprofit that empowers high school and middle school students to invent technology for community impact. Jordan gravitates towards questions about and celebrations of human purpose, and believes that young people should be given chances — often and early — to wrestle with their own understandings of meaning.

Show Highlights

  • Energy and ethos leaders desire for their schools.
  • A pivot point and catalysis for identifying as a Ruckus Maker.
  • Create community partnerships and design thinking with Project Invent.
  • A question all students find purpose and meaning in the education system.
  • Assist students with making a backpack of belonging.
  • Support teachers who want to make a ruckus get off isolation island.
  • Unlock talent and push people to believe they are talented.
  • The value in crosscutting conversations with students and teachers.
  • Close the distance students feel between the real world and the classroom.

“How old were you when you realized everything was invented? I think everybody has that moment or maybe you don't and those are the unlucky ones. You realize the world was designed and it can be redesigned and redesigned and redesigned and reinvented. We hope our students have that realization early on in their experience with us that everything around them was designed and they actually can be a part of that.”
