Angus Nelson reached out to me to be on the show and boy am I happy he did. One of the best parts of starting the podcast is that I’ve made more friends and have been exposed to infinitely more awesome people than when I was in my rather large “bubble” of Chicago.

I really appreciate this episode with Angus because he is so transparent … and an engaging speaker! I guess you have to be when you present to places like Whole Foods, BMW, and Coke!

During this episode we get into a lot of fun conversations around leadership, emotional intelligence, grace, and empathy. I know you are going to love it … in fact if I’m right do you mind sharing it with a friend?

Bio

Angus works with executives of the world’s largest companies as a speaker, coach, and facilitator. He’s spoken at corporate headquarters for Walmart, Whole Foods, Coke, BMW and others; hosts an Inc.com Top 20 business podcast called, “Up In Your Business”; and has been featured on Aol.com, Huffington Post, & VentureBeat. His book is called “Love's Compass: How Do You Recover After a Lost Relationship”.

In this episode you will learn:
  • model approach of leadership
  • how to become more self-aware
  • are you focused on the past or the future
  • TODAY (The only day that’s actually yours)
  • life is based in paradox
  • who is the person in the mirror?
  • do you love yourself?
  • are you afraid of success?
  • the importance of what you are learning and who you hang out with
  • tourist vs engagement
  • expose yourself to fear … you will grow
  • why we should be like arctic musk-oxen
  • what if we open-sourced education

Do you use systems in your school? Do you even know what systems are? I have heard the term “systems” used frequently, but I never really quite understood what they were … As a result, I brought on the systems expert, Kate Erickson, to give some very practical advice on how to start systematizing your work as a school leader.

This show very well could be a game changer.

It is short, but filled with practical tips and resources. Kate defines systems as "saving time, and working more efficiently, and not recreating the wheel."

Throughout your day, how may repetitive tasks do you complete (e.g. email, financial approvals, observations, etc.)? If you were able to speed up time around all those tasks, how would you spend this abundance of new time?

Bio

Kate Erickson is a creator, engager and implementer over at EOFire, a 7-day a week podcast that interviews today's most inspiring and successful entrepreneurs. She is also the host of Kate's Take: The EOFire Audio Blog and author of The Fire Path: A Beginner's Guide to Growing Your Online Business. Kate is passionate about helping entrepreneurs create freedom in their business and life through developing systems and processes that can help their business scale and grow.

In this episode you will learn:
  • definition of systems
  • first step to creating systems ...
  • why everyone CAN be a systems person
  • how to take inventory
  • what Kate learned about herself after doing an “inventory"
  • resources for creating systems
  • what could you do if you never had to teach a system again?
  • what Kate realized about herself that helped her implement systems
  • how to get through mindset blocks & the impostor syndrome

Butch Bellah is a superior salesman and former comedian who shares a ton of value in this show! I know Butch from the mastermind I participate in with Aaron Walker. Don’t know what a mastermind is … you can learn more here. If you think it’s the right fit, then I’d love to work with you.

Butch Bellah is the owner of B2 Training & Development where he works with salespeople and organizations to gain more appointments, win more business and retain more customers. At 35, he and a business partner acquired controlling interest in the company he’d helped build from a $35 million local business to one of the largest wholesale food distributors in the nation with annual sales almost a quarter-billion dollars.

In May 2009, Butch underwent triple-bypass heart surgery at 43-years old, completed cardiac rehab and ran his first 5K 190 days after surgery. He’s since completed dozens of 5ks, 2-10k’s and two half marathons.

He has written two books, The 10 Essential Habits of Sales Superstars: Plugging Into The Power of Ten and Sales Management For Dummies (John Wiley & Sons).

In this episode you will learn:

I met Steve Larosiliere through a mutual friend and helped him explore getting his after school program into Chicago schools. Listeners will notice how authentic and self-aware Steve is. This episode is going to rock your world because we go deep into leadership … especially how to create great teams.

I admire so many things about Steve, but can you imagine when you were in high school ...
  • if you created your own skateboard from scratch?
  • what if you went on monthly skating, snowboarding or surfing trips?
  • is there anything better than going on an over night trip with your high school peers … snowboarding for hours and writing the best personal essay ever for college?

Bio

Steve Larosiliere, is the President of STOKED, an award winning youth development program voted to the NY 100 (100 most innovative businesses in NY). Steve has been named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Black MBA, Honored as a Hometown Hero, and given a Community Impact Award. His work has appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, ESPN, Huffington Post, Nylon Magazine, Fuel TV, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, and Transworld Business.

Steve speaks worldwide on the subject of youth empowerment, social entrepreneurship, and closing the opportunity gap, and action sports at places such as Do Lectures, Creative Mornings, Nike, Bloomberg, The United Nations, and various universities. Prior to STOKED, Steve began his career with an independent marketing firm that he cofounded working with clients such as Sony Music, Reader’s Digest, and Rock the Vote.

In this episode you will learn:
  • trust … trust … trust
  • you’re doing the universe a disservice if you’re playing small
  • transactional vs transformative leadership
  • don’t underestimate the value of spending time with people
  • what hiring the wrong person does to an organization
  • the reason you need coaching and mentors
  • the story of starting STOKED
  • the 1st step of leadership is self-awareness
  • how to teach life skills through action sports
  • learning happens in the classroom … development happens outside the classroom

How do you change things when change is hard?

First, you should read Switch, by Chip and Dan Heath ...

Or if you're strapped for time, listen to my Mini-Monday episode that focuses on this topic.

According to the Heath Bros change centers on 3 elements:

  1. Rider (logic)
  2. Elephant (emotion)
  3. Path (necessary steps for change)

Leaders need to be aware of each of these 3 elements to effectively instill change in their organization.

Make sure you listen to the entire episode for a few anecdotes and examples of what you can do in your school or district to more effectively be a change agent.

Today I'm releasing a bonus episode ...

In my masterminds for school leaders we read an excellent leadership book each month and it bothers me that listeners miss the valuable insights from the books because I have limited availability in the masterminds.

So I decided to experiment ... in this show I share a few ideas around some impactful ideas from the book we read this July: Creativity, Inc.

Show highlights:

  • honesty vs candor
  • how Pixar delivers feedback through the Braintrust
  • what "good notes" are
  • how Pixar's feedback system is different than yours
  • Braintrusts and Masterminds

Thanks for listening!
