It's not just that you're going to worry about educating the kids, coming up with a curriculum and all that kind of stuff. No, you have to go and sell your school to get the community kids to come to your school.”

    • The issue with school leaders having real empathy instead of sympathy.
    • Demystify the myths leaders believe around being “nice” or “kind” to redefine archetypes of leadership.
  • Lead Below the Surface to throw out dominant leadership standards.
  • Build  a continuum of psychological safety where intersectional identities can bring their entire selves to work.
  • Throw out the agenda with tips to access empathy through observing eyes and listening ears.

It's not diversity and inclusion. It has never been anything separate. If an organization is trying to make it separate, I question what they're trying to do there. It’s really a part of culture. It’s really a part of how you develop people. It's really part of structures and systems on how you run your organization?”

They know that they sometimes have less time because all of these great things are happening with respect to school life. It keeps them moving quickly. It keeps them on their toes and it keeps them really engaged with their learning.”

Jennifer Cantor is a proud graduate of the University of North Georgia, where she received a degree in English with a concentration in Writing and Publication. She went on from college to become an English teacher at Rivers Academy (formerly known as Chalk to Champions) in the Fall of 2008. Jennifer quickly became immersed in the school and explored any opportunity that became available. Within her first two years at Rivers, she gained the role of Teacher Liaison and Admissions Coordinator. Jennifer completed her master’s degree in Educational Administration from National University in March of 2014. She became the Principal of Rivers Academy in the Fall of 2014. For the next four years Jennifer strived to create a school where students and staff feel valued and accepted. Rivers Academy has become leaders in their industry by providing students a high-quality college preparatory curriculum in just three school days.

At the age of 34, Jennifer became a co-owner in June of 2018 with her business partner, Debbie Beasley. During their first year of ownership, Rivers Academy joined the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA), where they have gone on to win three state championships in Golf and Swimming over the past three years. The school expanded by opening a new middle school building and adding eight new teachers at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. We currently have 240 students in 5th-12th grade and 32 staff members.

Jennifer has received the Greater North Fulton Chamber’s Women Influencing Business Rising Star Award in 2020. She has had the opportunity to serve on several external review committees for schools seeking accreditation, and she has really enjoyed being able to speak on various podcasts sharing her experience as the Principal and Co-owner of Rivers Academy. She loves any chance she gets to support her community and share her love and passion for the school with others. Jennifer lives in Cumming with her husband, David, and their two children, Reese and Margo. She loves camping with her family and spending time outdoors. Jennifer considers herself extremely lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to serve such amazing students, families, and staff at Rivers Academy!

Show Highlights

    • Being a great teacher requires you to disconnect with the university's definition of great teaching.
    • Inspire and motivate students to pursue their passion outside of the classroom.
    • Overcome the hardest part about operating outside the box in a unique way.
  • A plan to give kids balance without academic compromise.
    • Plant seeds to create real results for your community.
    • Give teachers a school where creativity shines and time is available for  developing their passion for students and watch the magic happen.
  • Activities and professional development inspired from the podcast to hallways for meaningful transformation.

“You can provide students with balance. There's nothing wrong with full time public or full time private, but one size doesn't fit all. We all remember the teachers who shook it up in the classroom. We want to be a part of a school that shakes it up for everybody and gives teachers the autonomy to be what they jumped into teaching to be.”

Everett Hendrixon, with Eco Supply LLC, has been in agriculture for 20+ years.  With an early career in law, and then business management, Everett believes he found what he wants to be when he grows up – someone who feeds people.  Whether that means giving fresh produce from his micro-farm or educating others on the benefits of growing real food, his mission is to connect as many as possible to their food source.

Show Highlights

    • Connect your learning community to their food source for positive educational outcomes.
  • The benefits of Flex Farm to get your students excited about authentic learning in the classroom.
  • Don’t be a “boiling frog” disconnected with the needs of students in both urban and rural areas.
  • The limitations, pitfalls and generational disconnect in our current agriculture system.
  • Get kids eating bags of lettuce to support connection to the community.
  • Teach your brain emotional intelligence, raise self worth, build confidence and self esteem with these systems to “grow” in the classroom.
  • The need to pivot to help students find solutions to the fragility of our supply chain and climate change to minimize the carbon footprint.
  •  Food can reframe the challenges you have in a way that makes solutions obvious.

Madeleine Mortimore is the Global Education Innovation and Research Lead for Logitech, where she leads research on EdTech hardware. With years of experience as a classroom teacher, Madeleine has developed a curriculum for grades 4-12. Her research experience includes positions at the MIT Teaching and Learning Lab. Madeleine has a Master of Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Show Highlights

  • Setting clear values on how you function as an educational team  requires reorienting structure toward impact for students in the education space, not what's easiest.
  • Incorporating voices from different angles of innovation drives meaningful change around a collective purpose to build community and support.
  • Logitech’s interactive tools to avoid complacency, increase student voice, and alleviate stress in the classroom.
  • The need to pivot from unrealistic assumptions pertaining to classrooms is needed to find balance in discovering true knowledge and abilities within your learning community.
  • Arm your staff with the right knowledge of what is truly a classroom.
  • You need this “North Star” to drive impact that takes many different routes.
  • Why is teaching infinitely harder than being a doctor?

“Sometimes it's hard to really stand your ground where maybe it's cheaper, maybe it's faster, or we need to hit a certain timeline.  I've learned my personal Northstar is just as important as having team values. I can stay really focused when there are those decisions to make, when the impact in the classroom is against the corporate need to be within a certain budget or timeline.”

As a chronically late student, Daniel Bauer once told his Chemistry teacher a fib about saving an entire girl scout troop from a burning building to get out of a tardy.

Daniel is not sure if it was the very made up story, the very real cookie he offered his teacher, or a combination of both that got him out of a detention that day …

That experience taught him it pays to develop your storytelling skills.

Daniel has been telling stories since then, most recently on the Better Leaders Better Schools podcast, ranked in the TOP 0.5% of 3 million global podcasts, and via his latest book, Mastermind: Unlocking Talent Within Every School Leader, co-published by Corwin and the National School Superintendents Association (AASA).

His mission is “to connect, grow, and mentor every school leader who wants to level up.”

Title: How to Use Storytelling To Address the (In)Equity in Education

Max Freedman is a reporter, producer, and co-host of School Colors. He created School Colors with Mark Winston Griffith, a veteran community organizer and the editor of Brooklyn Deep. After four years of research and reporting, the first season premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim. He is thrilled to publish Season 2 through NPR's Code Switch.Freedman is also one of the creators of Unsettled, a long-running independent podcast about Israel-Palestine and the Jewish diaspora. For Unsettled, he most recently reported and produced "The Birthday Party," an immersive narrative series about Palestinian-Jewish solidarity work in the occupied West Bank. In the early weeks of COVID-19, he produced Making the Call, a weekly show about medical ethics and the pandemic for Endeavor Content.

Before becoming a journalist, Freedman was a facilitator with Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, adjunct faculty at Pratt Institute and a senior educator at the New-York Historical Society, where he created an enrichment program for grades 4-8 using musicals to teach American history. He holds a B.A. in theater from Northwestern University, and an M.S. in design and urban ecologies from Parsons School of Design. His work on School Colors Season 2 was supported by the Spencer Education Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University.

Mark Winston Griffith is the creator, host and writer of School Colors along with Max Freedman. Griffith is a third-generation resident of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Until April 2022, he was the Executive Director of the Brooklyn Movement Center, a Black-led community organizing group based in Central Brooklyn that he co-founded in 2011. His parents' organizing in Central Brooklyn and authorship of a report on Community School District 16 inspired him to co-create School Colors.

While at Brooklyn Movement Center, Griffith created Brooklyn Deep, a citizen journalism initiative that chronicles neighborhood change in Central Brooklyn. He has served as an adjunct professor of urban reporting at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, and has been a board member of The City news site, City Limits Magazine and Free Speech TV.

Griffith is an enthusiastic parent of two teenage boys and has navigated the public, private and charter school systems.

Show Highlights

  • The power of storytelling as a vehicle for making change happen.
  • Looking through a leadership lens of equity and inequity that exists in our educational system.
  • Gain a keen sense of how race and gentrification impacts the conversation about education.
  • Be a curious leader by engaging in “real conversations” to avoid ill-conceived assumptions.
  • Examples of how the schools are conditioned by external forces.
  • Stories of principal development and the benefit of community resources.
  • The dangers of perception, zone preference and how it impacts families.

“We spend so much time in School Colors thinking about the problems, looking at what's going wrong and the barriers. To be quite frank, we don't spend enough time with kids and the very subject of the things that we're talking about. In spending that little time with those kids, it brought home to me what this was all about in the first place. These are not subjects or like broken people. These are vibrant human beings.”
