He loves his wife, two kids, beef jerky, and peanut M&Ms.

Danny “Sunshine” Bauer is the founder of Better Leaders Better Schools, a popular blog and most-downloaded podcast for leaders in education. He helps school leaders fight isolation and frustration through his leadership community, “The Mastermind,” in order to gain clarity and find solutions to their greatest challenges. Danny is also the author of a “#1 Hot New Release" on Amazon, The Better Leaders Better Schools Roadmap, which helps educators create legendary schools.

David Domena is today’s host.  David is an elementary teacher in southern California and a loyal follower of this very podcast,  Today the mic is turned to host Danny “Sunshine” Bauer.ny “Sunshine” Bauer.

Danny Sunshine Bauer - Avoiding Isolation

Danny experienced isolation as an assistant principal in Chicago. He felt overlooked and that is really why the podcast was birthed. Danny realizes that some school districts excel in their leadership development out of the park. Um, but has found through networking with assistant principals that they're often the leader that's overlooked.   So often assistants don't have meetings or leadership development. Danny knew that he had so much more to offer. Avoiding isolation is really hard to do, so through the podcast Danny connects leaders and helps to solve problems.

"And so basically as a podcast listener and listening to different leadership, business related entrepreneurial related podcasts, I thought to myself, well, if I invite people to a powerful conversation, put it out there for free through the show, maybe I'll learn some things right.  I could hear people's success stories, uh, what they've learned from failure and all the tips and tricks, you know, that we try to unpack through the better leaders, better schools podcast." – Danny “Sunshine” Bauer

Danny’s Dream School

Take time to download this episode and listen to Danny’s answer to a question he asks often on his podcast.  He will share is idea of what his dream school would look like. He will also share a little secret with his listeners!  Be sure to tune in!

Connecting Consistently

The greatest paradox that Danny experienced is when he opened up the podcast and the mastermind to the world,  HeI was able to connect on a much more consistent basis. Danny is in the Netherlands and David is in California and Danny is able to record this interview and share it worldwide through technology.

"So looking at what's available and just trying to get like minded people together a form of tribe and see what we could do as a result." – Danny “Sunshine” Bauer

Staying Focused

Danny is focusing on being fully present during these type of conversations or coaching conversations.  He practices meditation to help with choosing whether you want to stay distracted or bring yourself back with intention.  Danny desires to record inspiring and empowering conversations out there for educators. Danny makes a habit of checking in with himself to ensure that he is present frequently.

"But it's the small stuff, you know, it's not real big grand things, but they, they, they add up and when I can address them, it helps me just keep trying to become that best version of myself." – Danny “Sunshine” Bauer

Career Highlight

Danny’s career highlight is his mastermind group. He has worked with a mentor himself and has gained so much personal growth over the past six months.  While working with Aaron Walker in his mastermind Iron Sharpens Iron, Danny realized that the education industry needed the same type of group to avoid isolation and for transformation of leaders.  He decided that he would step up and fill the gap and serve school leaders. The mastermind group is there week in, week out, where you can build strong deep relationships. Members can be their true authentic self. Leaders can can bring issues of what they don't have figured out and where they need some help and the other members will  alongside you during this leadership journey and help you through it.

“And the best part is we don't work together so we can be brutally honest. There's no thinking like, well, you know, what's it going to be like at work if I, if I'm honest and blah, blah, blah. Say this stuff, uh, in, in there's no politics, so we're all just cheering each other on wanting everyone to be successful and we can do that in a very, very authentic, honest, but rooted in love and rooted in love type of way” - Danny “Sunshine” Bauer

Above all else, Scott Long is a son, a brother, a father, and a husband. These relationships inspire him to be better every single day.  Scott and his 3 1/2-year-old son Grady have a slogan they use with each other every day that best summarizes what he aspires to be for those around him, especially for his amazing wife Jessica: "Humble, Kind, Hard-working."

Scott is moved by his relationship with God to serve others as: a coach to inspire; a counselor to support; a teacher to lead; and a friend for fellowship & collaboration.  He is the Principal at Doherty Elementary in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where their mission, in partnership with families and the community, is to provide a safe place where all children learn, laugh, and grow together into lifelong learners.  The DOherty FAMILY lives this mission by behaving with four core values in mind:

  1. Rocky's Cuff Link
  2. All Hands In
  3. Finding the Marigold
  4. R.E.S.P.E.C.T

They succeed by growing together as a family, building a culture of positive abundance, providing strong systems of student support, and delivering wildly engaging instruction.

Scott has served in education for 15 years as a middle school language arts & AVID teacher, a middle school assistant principal, and now as an elementary principal.  He was the 2017 NASSP Michigan Assistant Principal of the Year, which was only made possible because of the amazing team of educators with whom he worked. He enjoys spending his free time hanging out with family, reading, working out, doing anything related to baseball, and listening to music by Switchfoot.

Scott Long Show Highlights:

  • Are you getting inspired on the road?
  • Scott’s walking club at school
  • How Scott uses his “Life Song Page”
  • The one question Scott has heard on the podcast that he asks every day

Christopher Lochhead is one of the pioneers of the “Authentic Dialogue” category of podcasts, a best-selling author and three-time Silicon Valley, public company CMO. He stands out for his unique point of view, sense of humor, hard-fought experience and whisky stained mind.

In Christopher’s new book, Niche Down: How to Become Legendary by Being Different, he and co-author Heather Clancy go deep, taking you on a fun, practical, example-packed look at what it takes to design and dominate your own niche. They blow up the idea that the path way to success is building a brand and instead teach you how to “Niche Down” and become known for a niche that you own.

Listeners love Legends & Losers because it is not your typical formulaic “interview show.”

Instead it’s one of the few real, raw, authentic dialogue shows.

From Elon Musk’s first investor Nancy Pfund, NBA legend Bill Walton, New York Times best- selling author Sebastian Junger, the cofounders of John’s Crazy Socks, 4-Star General Stanley McChrystal to convicted murderer-turned motivational speaker Will Little, Christopher has remarkable conversations with hundreds of legendary thinkers from Silicon Valley and beyond.

Christopher says Niche Down is for someone wanting a legendary career, and for “small-e- entrepreneurs” looking to make a mark on the world. It’s the first book on category design for smaller businesses and individuals.

Christopher Lochhead Show Highlights:

  • The power of authentic conversations and how to have more of them
  • Curious perspective vs win - lose
  • Foreground vs Background Conversations
  • What’s the purpose of you having the conversation you’re having right now?
  • The story of writing Niche Down
  • If you study Pablo Picasso, you can learn how to niche down
  • The exact question(s) to ask in order to become a category king
  • Better doesn’t mean you are different
  • Fall in love with the problem not the solution
  • What problem are we really solving in schools?
