Lori Villanueva has been in education for 25 years, starting as a high school Biology, Music and AVID Teacher, and now serves as Superintendent in a rural district of 4500 in sunny central California. She keeps kids at the center of her decisions, and loves working with educators to provide kids what they need to grow and thrive.
“I didn't come into this profession to help the superintendent look good. I didn't come into this profession for the glamour of the money. I came for kids. When I feel that kids need something and I feel that it's the proper and right thing to do I will move forward taking action and I can sleep really well at night.”

Nick Hoover is a school leader in Delaware who has a real passion for leadership and learning. He wants to change the world one person at a time. One student, one teacher, one leader at a time. This passion has led Nick, along with his brother, to start a leadership development company called We CLIMB You CLIMB.
His greatest passion though is being a father. He has seen his knack for helping others, leading others and self-improvement get passed on to his daughter. And he can think of nothing more important.
“I'll probably never go without being in a Mastermind. The rest of my life. It's been a great way to connect with leaders. Sometimes I say like minded people, but I'm careful to say that because it's like minded individuals in terms of people who are striving to get better and who want to improve, but it's not like minded people in terms of diversity. We have a diverse group of people and the way they think, and that's really important in the support and challenge.”

David’s life-long mission is to help create equitable school systems for kids across the United States. For the past 17 years, David has had the opportunity to guide children in the toughest circumstances to reach high levels of achievement, lead teams who create a culture of achievement, and drive systems change at some of the most underperforming districts in the country. David understands the impact that authentic leadership, effective governance, and equitable operations has on improving outcomes for kids, and seeks innovative ways to help leaders create meaningful change. He supports school and district leaders as they navigate the challenges that impede the progress for kids within urban school districts. He is driven to provide creative solutions for school and district leaders who seek to authentically build coalitions of support centered around kids, and desire to live in inclusive organizations that understand the importance and power of diversity
“I look at that child's face, I look at that child's name and realize that they don't have 12 to 13 years for us to get better. They don't have over a decade of time for us to figure out what we need to do as adults. I feel we as adults need to get out of the way so that our kids can progress at a rate in which they're needed.”

Education has always been a part of him. As a young boy raised by a single mom, he never forgot the value his mother placed on education and how it shapes the person you become in the future.
“While I don't teach students, I think my purpose has always been to teach adults and bring ideas from all industries to help us make a better education system.”

“I read it in a book recently and it said, ‘if something scares you get closer.’ I think I would put that on every school because we pull away from things we don't understand. And that's true in every field. If we don't understand something, we back off from it and we often deprive ourselves of some real growth. So I think that's a rather provocative statement.”

Rick earned a bachelor’s degree in adolescent education/social studies from Fredonia State University in New York. He has a master’s degree in adolescent education from Oneonta State College, also in New York. He earned a certificate of advanced studies in educational leadership from Binghamton University in New York.
He was a middle and high school teacher in upstate New York for eight years before coming to Charlotte. He completed his principal residency at Albemarle Road Elementary through New Leaders and spent three years as an assistant principal at Shamrock Gardens Elementary. In all, he has been in education for 14 years, two of those as a school principal.
His educational philosophy is this: No significant learning will take place without strong relationships between the student, teacher and family. Our role as a school is to build, engage, and enhance these relationships. With these relationships in place, we must provide unique learning experiences that allow students to create authentic representations of their learning and share them with a diverse audience.
He is also the proud father of a son, Lincoln, who will be a CMS kindergartner next year!
“Everybody wants to be more focused but I think in the end I don't know how many different task managers or to-do list apps that I've downloaded or tried. In the end it's not about the app, it's about the actual habits. You've got to build the habits and that's what I'm trying to do. How do I build those habits versus how do I find the tool that's going to fix it all because there's not a tool that's going to solve it.”

“One of the reasons I love this concept of being a Ruckus Maker, it's I think more of us should be making a ruckus. Education is in trouble. More of us should be making a ruckus about how we're teaching students, how we are running schools, how we're building schools, but instead we're just kind of blindly following a path and a model that no longer serves us.”

“Recognize that there are a lot of educators who have operated in the system. They have seen stories like this and just realized that the mountain they perceive they would have to climb in order to create that type of culture is so huge. They're often left with where do I even begin? And I think that's a pragmatic reality. My response is begin somewhere. The saying, ‘the best time to plant a tree was, 20 years ago and the second best time is today’. So let's start planting that tree today.”

“Unfortunately, a lot of our students don't know how to act socially, but also how to reflect and to change that behavior. Their behavior is a language really. If we're able to understand that language, it helps us better as educators. My goal is to have our teachers, everyone that we hire, whoever's in my building to make sure that we are hitting the social emotional needs of our students just as much as we're doing the academic, because if one is lacking, the other one can't thrive.”
