Once you find it, celebrate it, talk about it, share it, and it will spread like wildfire.”

Jean Latting, DrPH, LMSW-IPR, is a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant with over 20 years of consulting experience in private and public multicultural organizations. Hundreds of clients in leadership roles have benefitted from her practical solutions for building more rewarding, fulfilled lives at work and home.

Over the last few years, an increased emphasis has been placed on building inclusive organizations. Leaders within fifteen industries have aligned with her to develop quantifiable solutions for addressing “elephant-in-the-room issues.”

Jean gained over 35 years of research and teaching experience at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW). Upon retirement, she began consulting and coaching full-time. As President and Founder of Leading Consciously, she challenges her clients to rethink assumptions preventing them from becoming the best they can be as organizations, leaders and individuals.

She grew up on stories of generations of family members rising above adversity and supporting their communities. As a result, her career has followed a similar path toward helping others gain greater insight into the value of an empowered life, agile and resilient leadership, and culturally competent relationships with others.

Jean’s personal philosophy: “Helping people ‘level up’ by maximizing their potential in the workplace, community, and home through self-discovery and by building supportive environments.”

  • Actionable tips to get people to change without isolating anyone.
  • Eliminate systematic barriers that kept parents from coming to the school with a simple knock.

“Everybody needs to know that it's uncomfortable and it's okay. If we want the students to grow and learn, as teachers and educators, if we stay in our comfort zone, we're not role modeling to kids how to do something that's hard. Let's conquer this thing. Let's be role models to kids that even though it's hard work, we can do this thing. It's okay to be uncomfortable. Step one is to acknowledge that and to be willing to bear the discomfort. Step two is to have a rule of non-shaming. If it's an uncomfortable situation, somebody's going to say something horribly offensive and stupid. Those who know that are going to sit around snickering to themselves or cutting eyes at one another. Those who don't know it are going to be oblivious. To praise calling out, I object to. I say, call them into the community.”

DANIEL BAUER is the Chief Ruckus Maker at BETTER LEADERS BETTER SCHOOLS (BLBS). He launched the BLBS Podcast in September 2015. With over one million downloads, the BLBS show is the most influential podcast available for educational leaders. In 2016, he changed how professional development is offered to school leaders through the structure of a mastermind. Since then, Daniel has coached and mentored over 100 school administrators from every continent in the world (except Antarctica of course). In 2017, Daniel launched The School Leadership Series, his second podcast which amplifies the diverse voices in school leadership today. He is the author of The Better Leaders Better Schools Roadmap, which released as an Amazon #1 new release and his second book, Mastermind: Unlocking Talent Within Every School Leader, will be available on September 28, 2021, from Corwin Publishing. Daniel’s JUST CAUSE is “to connect, grow, and mentor every school leader who wants to level up.”

Show Highlights

  • 5 Day challenge
  • The biggest problem with creating a powerful school year.
  • When we don't know where to start.
  • Avoid creating a mediocre school year in 90 days
  • Simplify the complexity of school leadership
  • Unorthodox leadership connects leaders around the world
  • 5 pillars to the PSP program you need to experience.
  • Scott’s sticky core value story and other action tips
  • Have consistently powerful days in a row

“It's not about being the best. I think that's a silly thing to strive for. If you strive to get better every single day, the funny thing is you probably will ultimately become the best. Just improve 1% every day and that will lead to exponential results. To create the best year ever, you need a path, a path that simplifies the complexity of school leadership. When you have a path, all you need to do is take the next step.”

Guardian Adventures also provides curriculum and training development for making education exciting and memorable for adults and employees (including an OSHA training program for corporate lab safety which involves a zombie invasion). Meghan is also a STEM Curriculum Designer for ST Unitas (the parent company of The Princeton Review), a story-based adventure designer and staff trainer for Royal Caribbean Cruises (providing onboard educational adventures for their 6 million clients a year), a guest lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education and other major universities, and an international speaker on the topic of Immersive Experiences in Education, Learning, and Training for all ages.

In her free time, Meghan mentors women and minority entrepreneurs in the USA and Uganda and volunteers for hospice where she works with terminally ill patients of all ages as well as their families.

Show Highlights

  • How being a hospice volunteer helped create a non judgmental leadership approach.
  • Creating emotionally engaging cultural educational experiences.
  • Masterclass on empathy, listening, and powerful storytelling for leaders to use.
  • Decision making requires enough time to be uncomfortable with time
  • Fantasy and games create commonality and open up necessary possibilities for students
  • How to cause good trouble in the world
  • Before you can make a ruckus, you've got to create a sense of belonging.
  •  Inspire the idea of challenging what we think.
  • Decision making is about mistakes and the outcome. Own any outcome.

“One of the hardest things to do is to give that kind of compassionate listening when you are being judged. When the person you're listening to is having a hard time listening to you. It's tough because as a leader, you're in a position of authority. By that very nature, you are the one who has power over them or over the outcome. It can be very challenging when that emotional burden is in your chair because it is upon you to give more compassionate listening. Boy it can feel lonely. There can be days when you're human too, and you just don't want to hear yet another reason why someone thinks you're wrong.”

“To develop an innovator, you need to have a group of people who have diverse backgrounds, experience, and thinking, and by extension, you're looking at diversity in all of its forms. It's visible and it's invisible forms. We know that diverse groups outperform homogenous groups all the time. For us to be successful in our mission and our educational mission, we have to be a diverse school, both in terms of the students and the faculty. Essential to what we're all about, but  you can't stop there. Even in our acronym, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Action. Action is the A in social justice. Many schools or institutions stop short of the action, you have to actively dismantle the existing racism. You have to actively examine your own bias. You have to actively think about how you develop a community of diverse learners.”

“Simpli College says your job as a counselor is to help people create a log-in and that's it. All of a sudden you think about the people who for a long time, unfortunately, school has been about access to school. Most of the school experience is given to those who know the system. Many of our families are first generation and have not had a welcoming school experience as parents. They're not going to pick up the phone and call the counselor and figure out when they can get in and talk about whether even college is a good idea for their kid.”

Matt Silverthorne brings 30 years of high school teaching experience with him to Empowered — he introduced the program to its very first classroom in 1991.

Today Matt is the Strategic Growth Director. His job entails inspiring and growing a movement that attracts and motivates Empowered educator customers to become principled social change entrepreneurs.

Show Highlights

  • "Playing School" pivot to a Ruckus Maker connection to kids
  • First business we all start is the business of ourselves
  • Ownership of growth for the entire learning community
  • Blended methodology connecting students to markets and entrepreneurial thinking

  • The components of the “special sauce”
  • “Transformational mindset” Turning barriers into opportunities
  • Connecting Content to our own value
  • Incentivize behavior and own your choices

“We believe real change happens when we transform the classroom into a deeply experiential environment and we power those experiences with the undeniable power of markets. It means deemphasizing, tests, grades, and material. It doesn't mean deemphasizing their importance. It means deemphasizing those as the outcome in the classroom. Not getting the student to focus on the test, the material, but to focus on their own transformation, their own learning, their own transformation in terms of knowledge and skills. It means shining the spotlight on each individual student,  helping each individual student discover, develop and apply their unique gifts.”

Link, Ph.D., is the first female President of Allegheny College — one of the nation’s oldest and most innovative colleges where multidisciplinary learning breaks the conventional mold.  She is a recognized leader, scholar of Italian Language and Literature, and globalist. In more than 20 years of experience across a broad range of institutions, she’s provided students with a cross-disciplinary path to think critically and communicate creatively.

“One of the interesting things is that people are still trying to sort out as with me as a woman, where the line is between being a strong, determined, authoritative decision maker, but also someone who arrives at those decisions in a very non authoritative way. I like to describe my decision-making process as really iterative and collaborative, but the reality is once I arrive at a decision, I don't change it as long as I know how I got there, why I got there, and I can explain the ‘why’ behind it.”

-Dr Hilary Link

“I believe firmly that the advantage I have had of living outside my country, my cultural context has taught me that there are multiple ways to see the world. Multiple ways to approach everything from how you express yourself, how you say things, how work is organized, how education is organized, so that carries through and drives everything I do. Whether I'm doing that from Boston, where I grew up, or New York City or Rome, or now Meadville, what it's taught me is that you can always take a step to another side and see something from a different angle, and you can often see it differently once you've moved yourself.”

-Dr Hilary Link

Dr. Joseph Jones is the Superintendent in the New Castle County Vocational-Technical School District. A passion to provide all students an incredible and valuable learning experience Dr. Jones started teaching World and US History in 1996. A few short years later he found himself within the ranks of school administration hoping to make a difference on a larger scale. That desire and pursuit continued as he worked as a principal for seven years striving to reach two major goals: One, give teachers the best scenario to perfect and practice their craft; Two, provide students every opportunity to learn in a secure, enriching environment. As a school they made great strides and received various awards and accolades that enabled them to grow even stronger as a school community. Being the first high school in Delaware to receive the academic achievement award for closing the achievement gap was a hallmark of their relentless pursuit. His efforts continue now in a central office role as he oversees assessment and accountability. The combination of precision, best practices, and passion forges his educational ideals and provides  a clear path to reaching our goals. Educationally, he believes time spent within the walls of schools has been his best teacher.

“As a leader, we sometimes become more and more distant from the ground floor and all the work going on. You have to build mechanisms so that you have opportunities to really know what's going on. The last thing you want is to be disenfranchised from the actual work. The distance between the position and the person sometimes is too great and that is what builds disconnect within.”

-Dr Joseph Jones

“We believe deeply in the educational system. We want leaders to have the tools that  will build a culture in every school that can make it the best that it can be. It's a ‘law of the lid’, nothing rises above the capacity of the leader. When you build a leader's capacity to do great things, we're going to have great cultures in schools, and that goes down at the student level.”

Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced clinician who devotes much of her passion to working with children, teens, and adults who stutter. She works in private practice and the school setting to help support children who stutter, trains speech-language pathologists to work more effectively with students who stutter, provides various fluency trainings to school districts across the state, and is also directing the Junior Authors Program platform.

Susie grew up in Central California and completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Fresno State. She earned her Master’s Degree at Northwestern University, rated #2 in the nation for their program. While there, she met Kristin Chmela, M.A., CCC-SLP, BCS-F, an internationally recognized fluency specialist who had a true passion for helping kids who stutter. After graduating, Kristin and Susie have continued to work closely. Susie credits her passion and knowledge for working with people who stutter to Kristin Chmela, her mentor.

Susie has a history of designing and building successful programs. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed and piloted a successful framework for a Fluency Consultant role to utilize specialty skills and support SLPs. In 2016, Susie created a private practice focused on supporting children, teens, and adults who stutter. Within her practice, she built a mentoring program for children and teens who stutter to help guide younger children who are experiencing similar challenges. Most recently (2020), following the devastation of the Central California Creek Fire, she decided to write a book to help children who lost homes in the fire. During the process of writing the book, she created a unique platform to reinvent how children connect with literacy and books. Through the Junior Authors Program, children are involved in ongoing votes to help build the book from rough draft to published book on Amazon.

Susie’s love of working with children is evident from the first time you meet her. She cares for each one of the families she works with. She is full of positive energy, encouragement, and is an invaluable resource for anyone she works with.

“Educational leaders have the moral courage to create belonging in our schools and I think that is lacking in a lot of our schools. We don't have leaders who have the moral courage, because guess what, if you're going to create something different, create belonging for people who the system is not created for. You're going to have pushback. A lot of educational leaders need to understand that when they get pushed back you are creating space for people who the institution did not create space for.”

“At the core of Future Design School is this notion of developing and cultivating problem solvers, kids who have a flexible, adaptable skill set, and the creative confidence really to tackle whatever comes their way. That's the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit. What you want is kids who look at the world's obstacles as opportunities that they can roll up their sleeves and solve, and that they don't need to wait until they're adults to wrestle with real issues.”

-Sandra Nagy

“If we've seen anything that should be an inspiration for these kids in the last year, it's the fact that we got a vaccine out in eight months. If you don't believe in the power of human ingenuity and what we can do together, collaboratively working to solve a real problem. We don't take that moment to showcase that to kids and what might be possible, then we've missed the moment.”

-Sandra Nagy
