My experience in education includes 16 years teaching high school social studies, 6 years as a high school Assistant Principal, and I am now in my 5th year as Principal at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, California. I have always been drawn to public education and see it as part of the larger project that includes protecting our democracy and breaking down economic and social barriers that are embedded in our society and the educational system.

Show Highlights

  • A public school truly free from fees for students and parents
  • Pilot your great ideas for relevant data
  • Develop a faculty mindset regarding rigorous courses
  • Curriculum that pushes depth of learning for all students
  • The internal conversation every Ruckus Maker needs to have
  • How to move through discomfort for more equitable outcomes
  • Why Tracey has used Organize Binder for the past 10 years

“You have to think about all of the different things that kids are dealing with when you're coming up with ideas on how to help them. If there are some kids left out, then we have to think again. How can we really have Student X access all of the things that we're trying to offer. I think that for a long time it's been okay for students to be left out as long as most of your students are doing okay.”

Dr. Lori McEwen helps educators create classrooms and communities of deep and joyful learning.

Lori has served educators, students and families as a leader in urban, suburban and charter environments and as a teacher, researcher, consultant, and professor.  Some of her proudest achievements include providing leadership, vision and strategic direction for meaningful change--including the creation of personalized, mastery-focused high schools.

Lori is skilled at helping partners explore what’s possible in classrooms and schools by asking tons of questions, providing lots of readings, supporting risk-taking and making sure there’s laughter along the way.

Show Highlights

  • How to develop and lean on your gut instincts
  • The importance of a lengthy interview process when hiring
  • Lori provides valuable resources to support the mastery movement
  • The first steps to building a framework so students can be masters of their learning.
  • Why you can’t cheat on authentic assessments
  • Rigorous and social, emotional learning are not mutually exclusive, but inclusive
  • Lori’s favorite strategies to fill the 3 buckets that ensure deep and joyful learning

“The better that you and I can communicate with one another, the better we can collaborate. Once we have a great collaboration, we can get to this place of synergy. This idea that the room is smarter than any individual in the room. We can construct meaning to get to that higher level of creativity together because we're riffing off each other.”

Clayton Reedie is the current Director for the Campbelltown Principal’s Network in Sydney, the equivalent of a District Superintendent in the United States.

He began as a teacher in 1991 and from there earned early promotion to Executive Teacher, Assistant Principal and then Deputy Principal. Clayton’s first Principalship was at Mount Hunter, a small country school of 58 students. Further principal positions followed at Chipping Norton, Hinchinbrook and finally at Dalmeny Public School.

In 2019, Clayton left the school-based role to become a Principal (School Leadership) a position which centred on providing support and professional development to principals and school leadership teams. Earlier this year he was successful in being promoted into his current role of Director.

Clayton was honoured to be elected by his peers to lead the Liverpool Primary Principals’ Association as President for three years from 2011 to 2014 and in 2016 he was awarded a full scholarship to study at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Clayton lives in south-western Sydney and his greatest love is spending time with his wife, Nikki, and five boys aged 6, 13, 16, 19 and 22. They entertain, enlighten, love and give… but most of all keep him very much grounded in reality.

Show Highlights

  • The original Ruckus Maker’s framework to open doors of trust that turns challenging parents into biggest supporters
  • Avoid being closed minded to life changing opportunities
  • Heart shifts are needed instead of mind shifts in the school of life.
  • Only 12.5% of people are capable of change without these supports
  • 90% of complaints come because of these two factors
  • The pitfalls of quoting policy to your learning community
  • How to share data, warts and all with parents to create curriculum allies

"We need a heart shift before a mind shift." And that's because when people connect with an idea, emotionally, they're moved to action. There's no amount of numbers or logic that can change what somebody thinks, but if they can put themselves in somebody else's shoes, just for a moment, maybe just maybe they'll have an epiphany and want to do what is right.

This passion has led Nick, along with his brother, to start a leadership development company called We CLIMB You CLIMB.

“I'll probably never go without being in a Mastermind. The rest of my life. It's been a great way to connect with leaders. Sometimes I say like minded people, but I'm careful to say that because it's like minded individuals in terms of people who are striving to get better and who want to improve, but it's not like minded people in terms of diversity. We have a diverse group of people and the way they think, and that's really important in the support and challenge.”

David’s life-long mission is to help create equitable school systems for kids across the United States. For the past 17 years, David has had the opportunity to guide children in the toughest circumstances to reach high levels of achievement, lead teams who create a culture of achievement, and drive systems change at some of the most underperforming districts in the country. He supports school and district leaders as they navigate the challenges that impede the progress for kids within urban school districts. He is driven to provide creative solutions for school and district leaders who seek to authentically build coalitions of support centered around kids, and desire to live in inclusive organizations that understand the importance and power of diversity

Martha Dunagin Saunders is the sixth President of the University of West Florida. In her 30-plus years in higher education, she has served in academic and leadership roles at universities in Florida, Georgia, Wisconsin and Mississippi. Her area of academic expertise is in public relations and crisis communication for which she has won numerous awards, including two Public Relations Society of America’s coveted Silver Anvils.

Saunders led the University of West Florida to its status as a top-performing public university with the third-highest score in the Florida Board of Governors performance metrics. Saunders’ vision for UWF is for it to grow beyond its beginnings as a regional comprehensive university and be seen as a leader in innovation and cutting edge academic programs. She plans to build on the University’s strengths and its undergraduate traditions while creating programs that will attract the faculty and research funding needed to make the leap to the next level.

As an entrepreneurial leader, Saunders is passionate about creating innovative solutions to deal with the dynamic challenges facing higher education. As a change maker, she drives action behind these solutions to propel higher education into the future.

“I read it in a book recently and it said, ‘if something scares you get closer.’ I think I would put that on every school because we pull away from things we don't understand. And that's true in every field. If we don't understand something, we back off from it and we often deprive ourselves of some real growth. So I think that's a rather provocative statement.”

Rick earned a bachelor’s degree in adolescent education/social studies from Fredonia State University in New York. He has a master’s degree in adolescent education from Oneonta State College, also in New York. He earned a certificate of advanced studies in educational leadership from Binghamton University in New York.

He was a middle and high school teacher in upstate New York for eight years before coming to Charlotte. He completed his principal residency at Albemarle Road Elementary through New Leaders and spent three years as an assistant principal at Shamrock Gardens Elementary. In all, he has been in education for 14 years, two of those as a school principal.

His educational philosophy is this: No significant learning will take place without strong relationships between the student, teacher and family.  Our role as a school is to build, engage, and enhance these relationships.  With these relationships in place, we must provide unique learning experiences that allow students to create authentic representations of their learning and share them with a diverse audience.

He is also the proud father of a son, Lincoln, who will be a CMS kindergartner next year!

“Everybody wants to be more focused but I think in the end I don't know how many different task managers or to-do list apps that I've downloaded or tried. In the end  it's not about the app, it's about the actual habits. You've got to build the habits and that's what I'm trying to do.  How do I build those habits versus how do I find the tool that's going to fix it all because there's not a tool that's going to solve it.”

“One of the reasons I love this concept of being a Ruckus Maker, it's I think more of us should be making a ruckus. Education is in trouble. More of us should be making a ruckus about how we're teaching students, how we are running schools, how we're building schools, but instead we're just kind of blindly following a path and a model that no longer serves us.”
